As a not-for-profit, AWSN is primarily volunteer run.  There are thousands of volunteer hours put in annually to fund and support our Member Programs.  THANK YOU to all past and present volunteers who have helped over the past 25 years and are continuing to help AWSN advocate for equity, inclusion and diversity in Alberta STEM fields. In the months around our June AGM, we said goodbye and good luck to Susan Pieri, Jacqueline Gorman, Sandra Meagher, Karen Sagar, Shagufta Tasneem, Sana Javed and Kim Nguyen.  We are also looking forward to working with new board members Alexandra Edie (Co-President), Sihan Guo (Secretary), Angela Shi (Communications) and Amber Bohaychuk (Recruitment).

Join IndigiSTEAM on Thursday September 5th in Calgary for Mini-Tipi Paint Night to learn about the design, engineering and math of tipi building while creating your own mini-tipi.

In honour of Pride week, AVE Network will be hosting an Employment Workshop for LGBTQ2S+ Professionals in Calgary on September 10, 2019.

September 16-19 is Science Literacy Week and WiSEST has developed an exciting and interactive program for grade 7-9 students centered around this year's theme of "Oceans." If you work in a grade 7-9 school in rural Alberta and are interested in participating, please email wisest.outreach@ualberta.ca.

Join GeoWomen of Calgary & the Women In APEGA Advisory Group on Tuesday September 24th for a presentation by Alissa Boyle on Diversity and Inclusion in Industry – APEGA’s Current Initiatives and an update on the APEGA Workplace Barriers for Women study.

In Edmonton on Thursday September 26th, WiSER will be hosting #LETSTALK Mental Health to provide a platform to openly discuss mental health. Speakers and panelists will be invited to share how to reduce stigma and how we all can help to be more aware of mental health around ourselves.

Friends of WISEST is excited to present the 2nd annual Fundraising Breakfast, being held in Edmonton on Thursday October 3, 2019. Dr. Katie Gibbs from Evidence for Democracy will be speaking about the role scientists play in a political environment that is increasingly polarized and filled with misinformation. 

Join AWSN to see the Calgary Tower in purple on Ada Lovelace day, Tuesday October 8th, to start WinSTEM week.  Please let us know you are coming to ensure there are enough cupcakes!

WinSTEM week 2019 is October 8-12, it's time to start planning events!  Watch for a message in the coming days with info on how to submit your event for includion in our WinSTEM week online calendar.  Any events advocating for great equity, diversity and inclusion in Alberta STEM fields can be included in our advertising.

Nominations are open until October 31, 2019 for AWSN's Minerva Mentoring Award to recognize significant contributions made towards the mentoring of women of all ages, as well as for the inaugural Athena Outstanding Volunteer Award in honor of Dr. Margaret-Ann Armour to recognize a volunteer who has made contributions to the AWSN community.

AWSN is looking to fill some key volunteer roles.  We are looking for team members to fill the roles of Co-Secretary, Treasurer and Co-Communications with a 2-3 year committment.

AWSN also has a short term vacancy with the Awards committee beginning immediately until March 2019.
