Karen has over 25 years' experience as a geotechnical engineer and project manager in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, and Canada. Six years ago, Karen was offered the opportunity join Klohn Crippen Berger as a Senior Project Manager managing multi-disciplinary, multi-million dollar design and operational support projects for oil sands tailings facilities. She moved her then stay-at-home husband and nine-month-old daughter to Calgary to take the position.
Currently, Karen is Group Manager - Engineering and Senior Geotechnical Engineering for the oil sands team. Karen is co-chair and one of the co-founders of Klohn's employee resource group, Calgary Women in Klohn, which was awarded the 2016 APEGA Women in Engineering and Geoscience Champion Summit Award.
Born and raised in the UK, Karen obtained her Bachelor of Science Honours degree in geology with geography from the University of Bedfordshire, and her Master of Science and Engineering degree in Foundation Engineering from the University of Birmingham.
Away from work, Karen is a former member and Vice-Chair of the Women in APEGA steering and metrics committees. She enjoys mentoring engineers and geoscientists through APEGA, mentoring youth at Cybermentors, and as a female STEM professional for Operation Minerva. Karen is also a Beaver Leader. With her daughter, a budding geologist and palaeontologist, attending Langevin Science School Karen also gets to volunteer for lots of field trips! In her role at AWSN, Karen is looking forward to developing and diversifying the membership, both on a program and individual level.
