2004- 2005 AWSN Scholarship
Congratulations to Michelle Chow, the winner of the first annual AWSN $3000 scholarship for women continuing their studies in science, engineering or technology in Alberta.
Michelle is entering the 4th year of her B.Sc. in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology at the University of Calgary. As part of her program, she is also doing an honours research project at the Heritage Medical research building in Calgary, developing a new technique to visualize proteins in polyacrylamide gels, which is widely applicable to both animal and human research. In the past, Michelle has also performed research on liver cancer, where her project involved isolating the various molecular markers that characterize the progression of the disease. Her goal is to one day become a physician because it gives her the opportunity to use science every day in the treatment of patients.
In addition to her excellent academic record, Michelle has demonstrated leadership through her involvement with a number of different organizations including the Women in Science and Engineering club and the University of Calgary’s U of C 101 program, which orients first year students to life at university. Michelle has also been involved with the Student Ambassador program on campus and was a Peer Mentor for entering science students. Aside from her on-campus involvement, Michelle actively volunteers at the Foothills hospital and with St. John Ambulance. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys reading, playing the piano, skiing and traveling.
UC-WISE is very fortunate to have Michelle as it’s President for 2005-2006
