National Science Literacy Week

A week long celebration of science in Canada September 18-24, 2017

AWSN is celebrating Science Literacy Week, 2017 through an interesting collaboration with a Calgary teacher and AWSN member, Cheryl Wecels (WinSTEM Recognition Award 20016).  Her class plus 100 others across Canada are participating in a Partners in Research webconference isolating DNA from strawberries, bananas, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and even M&Ms at one location.  Ms. Wecels class is one of 7 live locations.

As this blog is being written, globs of DNA are being dangled in front of webcams across the country.  To read more about the special event, find out how to do the extraction with your class or kids at home or how to make a strawberry DNA daiquiri for yourself, be sure to read the Kitchen Science column in the October issue of STEM Education Today.
