2006-2007 AWSN Scholarship
Hometown: Calgary, AB
Education: Third year of a BSc. program with a specialization in Chemistry at the University of Alberta.
Career Aspiration: “I am hoping to become a Medical Doctor.”
With both her parents being engineers, science has always been a passion for Sarah. “Both my mom and dad encouraged me to follow my strengths,” she says. “It was during Grade 11 that I decided to go into Chemistry at university. I had a really great teacher who made science so interesting and related it to things in everyday life.
In addition to her university work load and a little fun, such as playing varsity field hockey for the U of A Pandas, Sarah also enjoys working with children.
“I spend a good deal of time with children through in-school mentoring and volunteering in the hospital. I have had the opportunity to go to Southeast Asia and India over the past two summers and while there, I was able to volunteer with little kids, which was wonderful.
Sarah’s advice to girls thinking about careers in science is to not only get out into the workforce, but take a leadership role.
“Never let anyone tell you that you are not good enough to do something,” she says, offering her favourite quote from author Les Brown: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.”
