Dr. Snedden was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in March of 1959. As the eldest of four girls, Shann followed her dreams and goals to become a dentist after graduating from Medicine Hat High School. Perhaps these early years with her younger siblings caused Shann to develop the leadership and mentoring skills she now possesses. After attending Medicine Hat College in pre-dentistry, She was admitted into the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta, ultimately obtaining both her BSc and DDS.

Since graduating, she has had a variety of career-related experiences. Even before she had graduated, she had summer employment as a medical and dental office receptionist, dental assistant, assistant in a hospital laboratory, and externships in a periodontics office. Once she became a fully licensed dentist, she became an associate with Dr. Kluzak Periodontist in Calgary. Three years later, she moved back to Medicine Hat, working as an Associate with River Centre Dental Clinic. After three years, she became a Partner in the clinic where she is today. Even with the vast responsibilities of her patients, she is Manager of the Hygiene and Sterilization Departments and is the Infection Control Officer.

Dr. Snedden is a member of local, provincial, national, and international dental associations, all of which add to her credibility as a health professional.

In addition to being a successful dentist, Dr. Shann Snedden makes time for her other interests and community activities. She is the current chair of the River Heights Elementary School council, of which her daughter, Erica, attends. She is also a sponsor and member of the selection committee for the Medicine Hat Leaders of Tomorrow Awards. Formerly, she was the chair of the Medicine Hat Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as a member of the Calgary Business and Professional Women’s Club. Dr. Snedden also was the Medicine Hat Dental Society Representative for Dental Health Month programs and presentations.

Dr. Shann Snedden has extended her knowledge and experience by becoming a mentor for youth. She was a member of the organizing committee when the first “Operation Minerva” project was done in Medicine Hat, an annual program encouraging young women in grade 9 to pursue sciences and math. As a mentor for “Operation Minerva”, she has provided guidance and support for the next generation. She has also provided on-going job shadowing opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing careers in dentistry, as well as has made classroom presentations in Junior and Senior High Schools regarding career choices. This dedication to the youth of Alberta has made Dr. Shann Snedden a true “Mentor of the Millenium”.

All in all, Dr. Snedden is a very dedicated woman, whose many roles have contributed to her attaining the honour of the AWSN’s Mentor of the Millenium Award.
