The future of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical exploration is in your hands today!

Join us at the annual AWSN STEM Affair, you will be granting Alberta youth the opportunity to access any of our Explore member programs, including Operation Minerva and Power to Choose, that will enhance their educational experience.

At the STEM Affair you will be entertained by scientific displays and be treated to the address of our Key Note Speaker, Dr. Gina Cherkowski, the Founder and CEO of STEM Learning Labs.  A light food selection will be provided and there will also be a cash bar available.

Dr. Gina Cherkowski is passionate about supporting girls to learn about and develop their own passion for STEM and a STEM career.  In a recent article in STEM Education Today, it was announced that Gina is the founding chair of Million Women Mentors Canada.  At our STEM Affair, we will hear much more about this initiative.

Biography: Dr. Cherkowski is an educational game changer on a mission to ensure all students have access to high quality STEM learning experiences so they are aptly prepared for our technology-driven, dynamic world.

Dr. Cherkowski holds a PhD in Mathematics Education as well as in Culture Studies in Education. She has extensive experience in teaching and learning as a remediation specialist, a classroom teacher, and as a university professor for both undergraduate and graduate courses in education both in Canada and internationally.

Gina believes that play, exploration and meaning are critical factors for learning for all students. Gina strongly advocates that all students require and deserve opportunities to participate in high-level, hands-on, engaging and meaningful learning experiences so they are able to meet the demands of the 21st Century. Gina and her team believe that STEM Education combined with Arts and Entrepreneurialism provide pivotal learning opportunities that equip children with the skills, tools and mindsets they need for the 21st Century.

Dr. Cherkowski understands that math is a gatekeeper for many students. As a social justice math educator and learning activist, Gina believes that all kids can and should be proficient in math as well as the other STEM fields and fights to make this a reality. Her current research explores teaching math conceptually using spatial temporal reasoning to facilitate a deep understanding of mathematics for diverse learners. Another area of interest is the development of visual spatial skills through interaction in highly engaging, hands-on STEM and STEAM projects like coding, robotics and Maker Education.

Corporate Ticket Challenge

Last year, one very large Calgary-based international company suggested a unique twist on sponsorship and we challenge other companies to do the same.

1.  Promote WinSTEM Week to your female staff and encouraging them to come up with WinSTEM Week activities.

2.  Expense the ticket of any of your staff interested in attending The STEM Affair Saturday Oct 14, 2017.

Are there any other companies out there that have women working for them?  Have you said "Thank you" to them for the great job they do?  Would you match this idea from a great corporate sponsor?

Women in STEM:  Ask your supervisor.  See if they would support you celebrating who you are by supporting your ticket price.  More than 1/2 of each ticket goes directly to AWSN programs.
