January 2022

As we look forward to 2022, we have much work to do to ensure that equitable practices become widespread in Alberta. We have rested over the last weeks of 2021 and are ready to continue our work with excluded populations in Alberta's STEM fields. The beginning of 2022 will see AWSN tackle strategic decisions regarding our future path and we are excited to engage communities and community members in defining our path and share our decisions with you.

Reimagining Non-Profit Governance through a Social Justice Lens

Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (ECVO) has developed a foundational document for their organization that can also be used as a beginning guide for any organization interested in making their governance structure more equitable.

This report responds to the question: how might we use a social justice lens to reimagine non-profit governance in Alberta?

Based on conversations within ECVO and a review of academic and grey literature, the report explores topics such as: governance practices in a neoliberal context, a history of governance approaches, democratizing non-profit governance, case studies in participatory governance

EDI in Canada's Research Communities
 

NSERC is developing a new strategic plan, NSERC 2030, that reflects Canada’s priorities for funding natural sciences and engineering over the next decade. They released a set of discussion papers to get feedback from the public about issues related to funding for natural sciences and engineering research.

As part of its strategic planning exercise, NSERC has created a series of discussion papers as a starting point to solicit feedback from external stakeholders on strategic issues relevant to natural sciences and engineering research funding. Two of NSERC's discussion papers are about Supporting EDI in the Research Community and Supporting Indigenous Researchers and Research.

This is an important opportunity to share your ideas about how NSERC can support initiatives like EDI and Indigenous representation through its funding policies.
