We are all in this together - how are you coping? As we move into working from home, crisis schooling (let's be clear, this is absolutely NOT homeschooling) and physical distancing, many of us are looking for ways to help and others are needing help. Demand for many non-profit services is already increasing and will continue to increase as women and other under-represented populations are being unduly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through job losses, increased demands in childcare and homeschooling and expected increases in domestic violence incidences. The consequences of the pandemic and effects on our greater sector must be viewed through a gendered lens. Non-profits, charities
and social enterprises are largely dominated by both paid and unpaid female labour. Women also form the majority of many frontline health care fields: Women represent over 90% of nurses, 75% of respiratory therapists, and 80% of those working in medical labs.

As we navigate these uncertain and evolving circumstances, we want to know how your organization has been and is being affected and what support you might exect to need as we emerge from isolation and closures. As programs and organizations within the AWSN network, the effects that you feel affect AWSN. This information will be collected and used to advocate for the nonprofit sector in Alberta. Nonprofits are unique with a unique set of challenges that AWSN would like to help define for the greater community and the Government of Alberta as we all work together to adapt and continue providing important services to our fellow community members. .

Data Collection for all Alberta Voluntary Organizations

The Alberta Nonprofit Network, ABNN, is creating a virtual support system for nonprofits during the COVID-19 pandemic. These include resources for talking to funders through these times, along with advocacy ideas and examples relevant to communicating the urgency of secure and flexible funding to the Government of Alberta. ABNN is also collecting data from voluntary organizations across the province to capture the impacts of this pandemic.

Intersectionality must be considered throughout the COVID-19 crisis

AWSN has submitted a letter to both provincial and federal governments encouraging secure and flexible ongoing funding for non-profit organizations. We are encouraging our representatives to ensure that an intersenctional, gendered lens is applied when assessing the ongoing needs of our communities.

If you are able, please add your voice to the advocacy efforts for under-represented populations often served by non-profits and especially those in the Alberta STEM arenas. Examples of advocacy letters and contact information for government representatives can be found near the bottom of the link below.

Upcoming Programs

April 15 - Application deadline for the WISEST Summer Research Program has been extended to April 15. The program is open to current grade 11 students. Female and non-binary students interested in STEM fields and male students in nursing, nutrition or human ecology.
